Is AI Making Content More Inclusive or More Generic?

We talk a lot about how AI makes content faster.
But does it actually make it better?

Especially when it comes to inclusion, the answer isn’t so clear.

Generative AI has the power to break barriers. It can translate, simplify, and help people with different communication needs access the same message.

But that doesn’t always mean the message feels personal. Or even culturally aware.

Imagine a team writing an internal message to employees across five countries. They use AI to generate the draft. It’s clean. Clear. Technically accurate. But it lacks local expressions. There’s no warmth. No sense of place.

That’s when inclusive turns into... generic.

Many of these tools are trained on data that reflects dominant voices. That means some perspectives show up more often than others. Some ways of speaking are favored. Others are missing.

In research on AI and communications, one concern is that automation can create the illusion of neutrality. But neutral isn’t always inclusive. Sometimes, it just means stripped of identity.

AI can absolutely help us communicate better.
But it still needs our input to make sure what we’re saying really lands.

You can use AI to open the door.
Just don’t forget to invite real voices inside.
