Au Pair Rematch? It's Not the End — Here's What You Need to Know

No matter how perfect your application is, you probably never imagined you’d go through a rematch. And then... it happens.

First of all: it's not your fault.

You can be the most prepared, intelligent, fluent-in-English, confident driver in the whole program — but if just 1% of the match doesn't work (for you or the family), a rematch might be the next step. And now, maybe you’re crying or calling your mom, hoping this stressful moment will just disappear.

Breathe. It’s going to be okay.

I know what you’re feeling — really

I’ve been there. Twice.
So trust me when I say this again: it’s not your fault.

More important than the family or the program is you. Your well-being comes first.

Also, here’s something many agencies or counselors won’t tell you:
You don’t always have only two weeks to find a new host family.
If you have a place to stay or a good support system, you might get one month or even more. So don’t rush into something that doesn’t feel right just because you’re afraid of time.

My personal experience with rematch

I had two rematches during my Au Pair experience in the USA.

  • The first one happened just two weeks after I arrived. It was one of the most stressful days of my life. But now? I see it as the best thing that could have happened. Still — yes, I cried a lot. I prayed a lot. I called everyone I could think of. And still, no one really understood what I was feeling in that moment.
  • The second one was my choice. And honestly? It was one of the happiest days of my Au Pair journey. Choosing myself, standing up for my needs — it felt empowering.

So yes, it’s emotional. But you’ll get through this. You have time. You are strong. And most importantly: there is always a family looking for an Au Pair. Always.

A reminder for your heart

Nothing in this program is permanent. Being an Au Pair is like a roller coaster — some days are full of joy, others full of doubt. One moment you’re on top of the world, and the next, you’re questioning everything.

You will grow.
Not because you “need to” grow — but because this experience pushes you to.
